An immersive escape to the wild: The History of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Opening in April 2001, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge brought an entirely new level of immersion to Walt Disney World Resort—offering guests the rare opportunity to stay in a deluxe resort surrounded by live African wildlife. Inspired by traditional African kraal villages and designed by architect Peter Dominick (who also designed Wilderness Lodge), Animal Kingdom Lodge features sweeping, horseshoe-shaped structures that maximize views of the surrounding savannas.
Located adjacent to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, the resort was carefully designed in consultation with cultural experts, wildlife specialists, and African artisans. From handcrafted wood carvings to authentic artifacts and museum-quality artwork, every detail honors the diverse cultures of Africa.
In 2009, the resort expanded with the opening of Kidani Village, a Disney Vacation Club property that added more villas, a second pool area, and the popular restaurant Sanaa. With over 200 animals and birds across its savannas—including giraffes, zebras, and gazelles—Animal Kingdom Lodge offers one of the most extraordinary and educational resort experiences in the world.
Today, it remains a favorite for Disney guests seeking a truly one-of-a-kind stay—where adventure, culture, and luxury meet just moments from the magic.
